Things you should own

  • Buffy The Vampire Slayer - Collector's Set (40 discs)
starring Sarah Michelle Gellar, Alyson Hannigan, Nicholas Brendon, Anthony Head, James Marsters

Hands down, this is the best show that was ever on tv. (I know there are Firefly fans out there who would disagree, but too bad). "Giles, I'm 16 years old. I don't want to die."(season finale, 1st season of Buffy, episode: "Prophecy Girl"). As if being a teenager isn't hard enough, Buffy Summers has the additional responsibility of being the Slayer, the "Chosen One" ("Into each generation, a Slayer is born...") and protecting the public. A responsibility she didn't choose, but must take on. We watch as Buffy kills demons and saves the world and comes into her own by accepting her powers and basically, just plain kicking demon ass. I came to this series too late, after it was canceled. I never understood the big deal, until one weekend when I was sick, I stationed myself on the couch with the first season of Buffy. I watched the entire season in one day. I was hooked. I have so many favorite episodes, too many to choose just one favorite. Joss Whedon and the staff of writers and producers/directors really captured the pain (and humor) of high school, relationships, and the changes that young people go through as they grow into adulthood, trying to figure out their place in the world. You will find that you become attached to these characters and have a vested interest in the Scooby gang. Buffy is my hero, and if you watch the show, she'll become your hero too. Trust me, watch the show, and you too, will be hooked.

  • Harold and Maude
    Paramount Studio

My favorite film. Ruth Gordon is spectacular as Maude and Bud Cort is priceless as Harold. This film is very funny and very Zen. Go watch it.

  • New York (7 Episode PBS Boxed Set)
    Pbs Home Video

Even if you're not a New Yorker you have to see this Ken Burn's documentary. Then, perhaps you'll know why so many people love this city...including myself.

  • The Lorax
by Dr. Seuss, Theodor Seuss Geisel

My mom and dad used to read this to me when I was a kid. Dr. Suess knew how to talk to children...and certainly not down to them.

  • Jazz - A Film by Ken Burns
    PBS Home Video

One of the things I enjoyed about watching this documentary was the anecdotes about the musicians. My favorite story was about Bessie Smith...and how she confronted and chased away the KKK who appeared at one of her outdoor shows. Tough (and brave) lady she was.
